Happy Feet

Anatomically, our foot is composed of bones, muscles and ligaments. The first metatarsal bone- the bone found in our big toe and the mid section of our foot carries most of the body weight and plays a major role in forward motion. The calcaneus bone forms our heel and works along with the tarsal bone to enable the movement the ankle joints. These are the major parts of our foot that works hard for us to perform our daily activities. It is important to make sure that these foot parts are well protected and kept to be in their anatomical position as much as possible to avoid foot and leg pains.

Slippers

A slipper or houseshoe is a semi-closed type of indoor/outdoor shoe, consisting of a sole held to the wearer's foot by a strap running over (or between) the toes or instep. Slippers are soft and lightweight compared to other types of footwear. They are mostly made of soft or comforting materials that allow a certain level of comfort for the wearer. This can range from faux fur to leather.

There is also a sizing issue, as novelty slippers do not usually come in individual sizes, merely a sizing guide. This can cause issues when trying to find a pair that fit properly. Also, the sheer size of the slippers can cause issues when walking. Most styles of slipper offer too little or no support for the tender arch of the human foot. This is essential to children, whose young feet are still developing. The lack of support can allow the foot to roll inwards during walking, which can cause many health issues.

Athletic Shoes

Athletic shoes are specifically designed to be worn for participating in various sports. Since friction between the foot and the ground is an important force in most sports, modern athletic shoes are designed to maximize this force, and materials, such as rubber, are used. Although, for some activities such as dancing or bowling, sliding is desirable, so shoes designed for these activities often have lower coefficients of friction. The earliest athletic shoes date back to the mid 19th century were track spikes — leather shoes with metal cleats on the soles to provide increased friction during running. They were developed by J.W. Foster & Sons, which later become known as Reebok. By the end of the century, Spalding also manufactured these shoes as well. Adidas started selling shoes with track spikes in them for running and soccer in 1925. Spikes were eventually added to shoes for baseball and American footballl in the 20th century. Golfers also use shoes with small metal spikes on their soles to prevent slipping during their swing.
The United States Rubber Company was founded the same year and produced rubber-soled and heeled shoes under a variety of brand names, which were later consolidated in 1916 under the name, Keds. These shoes became known as, "sneakers", because the rubber sole allowed the wearer to sneak up on another person. In 1964, the founding of Nike  by Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman of the University of Oregon introduced many new improvements common in modern running shoes, such as rubber waffle soles, breathable nylon uppers, and cushioning in the mid-sole and heel. During the 1970s, the expertise of podiatrist also became important in athletic shoe design, to implement new design features based on how feet reacted to specific actions, such as running, jumping, or side-to-side movement. Athletic shoes for women were also designed for their specific physiological differences.

A pair of Converse All-Stars
Shoes specific to the sport of basketball were developed by Chuck Taylor, and are popularly known as Chuck taylor All - Stars  . These shoes, first sold in 1917, are double-layer canvas shoes with rubber soles and toe caps, and a high heel for added support. In 1969, Taylor was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in recognition of this development, and in the 1970s, other shoe manufacturers, such as Nike, Adidas, Reebok, and others began imitating this style of athletic shoe. In April 1985, Nike introduced its own brand of basketball shoe which would become popular in its own right, the Air Jordan, named after the then-rookie Chicago Bulls basketball player, Michael Jordan.

Shoes

A shoe is an item of footwear intended to protect and comfort the human foot while doing various activities. Shoes are also used as an item of decoration. The design of shoes has varied enormously through time and from culture to culture, with appearance originally being tied to function. Additionally fashion has often dictated many design elements, such as whether shoes have very high heels or flat ones. Contemporary footwear varies widely in style, complexity and cost. Basic sandals may consist of only a thin sole and simple strap. High fashion shoes may be made of very expensive materials in complex construction and sell for thousands of dollars a pair. Other shoes are for very specific purposes, such as boots specially designed for mountaineering or skiing.
Shoes have traditionally been made from leather, wood or canvas, but are increasingly made from rubber, plastics, and other petrochemical-derived materials.

The foot contains more bones than any other single part of the body. Though it has evolved over hundreds of thousands of years in relation to vastly varied terrain and climate conditions, the foot is still vulnerable to environmental hazards such as sharp rocks and hot ground, against which shoes can protect.

Smelly Feet, cure smelly feet

Smelly feet and shoes can be not only annoying but embarrassing as well. Find out about the best foot odor home remedies. I know from experience you can cure smelly feet!

Cure for Smelly Feet

1. Wash Your Smelly Feet Regularly
with surgical spirit, antibacterial soap
Make Washing your Feet a Pleasurable Activity.
Since you have to do this daily and with care you might as well enjoy washing your feet. Not only will you get rid of your smelly feet but you'll feel great about taking care of yourself and your body.

Another plus is that the feet contain many nerve endings and pressure points and foot baths' or spa's provide not only relief for the feet but also for actually the whole body.

2. Wear Leather Shoes and Cotton Socks
change shoes every day, make use of insoles

After you have washed your feet make sure to wear
cotton socks. I prefer to wear cotton sport socks (these are also available in black or blue) because these tend to absorb more sweat. When you buy socks take a look at the label on how much percent of the socks are made of cotton. Many times they are also made partly of synthetics but make sure your socks contain at least 70% cotton.

Replaceable Insoles
Put replaceable insoles in your shoes. Specialized odor eater insoles exist of charcoal which is also used in air filters and other filter systems. While filtering bad odor these soles can also be part of a quick solution. If you don't have time to start treating your smelly feet thoroughly yet you using these soles will remove bad odor partially.

3. Use a Quality Antiperspirant Foot Spray
Aluminum chloride liquid or spray prevents sweaty feet
There are many types of foot antiperspirants but the one that really works like a charm is the spray that contains aluminum chloride (Aluminum hydroxychloride). This is what I got prescribed by my doctor the first time and if you'll use it regularly this will keep your feet dry and fresh. It worked for me but you have to keep using it.

Misconception about Safety Shoes

Some Misconceptions about Safety Shoes

Safety shoes are worn by many working men and women exposed to unfavorable conditions, such as those found in industrial areas or mining sites. They keep the feet safe from sharp objects, chemicals, or heat. Wearing them is usually part of the protocol and company standards. Many people think that shoes made for safety have enough rigid parts to cause discomfort. There might have been shoes with the wrong fit or of poor quality that walking in them can become an ordeal.

There is also a notion that protective shoes are stiff and hard that walking in them almost feels like walking with steel shoes on. Indeed, those with steel sole layer will feel a bit stiffer than typical trainers, but with the protection they offer, some flexibility could be compromised. The major purpose of safety footwear is to keep your feet from harm. Nevertheless, there are items that support more mobility without discomfort. In fact, a lot of them are made with layer of cushion for comfort.

Please don't think that shoes with steel or aluminum reinforcements easily get hot or cold because these shoes are well lined with insulating materials. Typically, they are versatile in different ambient temperature conditions, so you can count on them whether it is hot or cold.

Fit for Feet

Shoe-Ins

Which styles of shoes are the kindest to your feet?

·         Low heels. Go for two inches or lower, which won’t alter the way your muscles work as much or add extra pressure to the balls of your feet.

·         Stacked or thicker heels. Spindly stilettos make for unstable feet. A slightly chunkier heel helps keep the foot in alignment and reduces the risk of straining ligaments.

·         Wide toe boxes. A rounded toe gives the foot room to move naturally. A pointy toe can squash toes, but “if the point begins to narrow beyond your toes.

These shoe styles can be problematic.

·         Heels over three inches. They increase the pressure on the balls of the feet, says Marlene Reid. If you wear them, limit it to a few hours at a time.
·         Platforms. “A shoe should bend at the ball of the foot,” says Reid. A stiff style prevents natural foot movement.
·         Flat shoes. Flip-flops and ballet flats usually offer no arch support. Wear shoes with a wide ¼-inch heel.

Healthy feet and Good shoes

Healthy Feet & Good Shoes Are Important For Your Overall Health

Twenty five percent of the bones of your body are in your feet. If any of these bones are misaligned, your entire body could be affected. You might not even feel that you have a foot problem but it can be causing knee problems, hip or low-back problems, shoulder and neck problems and even headaches or stomachaches. Foot problems can also cause emotional stresses and physiological changes in the body like adrenal stress, blood sugar, fatigue and many others. Many doctors look to the mechanics of the foot for proper posture but there is so much more making up the foundation that we stand, walk and run on.

Any health symptoms that are related to foot problems will get worse as the day goes on because your feet become more stressed as the day goes on.

Muscles that support the shape and function of the feet are related to the adrenal glands and the bladder. Problems with these muscles can cause foot problems and eventually deformation of the feet can occur. “Shin splints” "Dropped Arches" or “Flat feet” and "Plantar Fascitis" can also be caused from the muscles of the feet not working properly.
Reflexology of the foot has become very popular as an alternative treatment for health problems. There are reflexes that are related to organs, glands and other parts of the body on the bottom of the foot. The reflexology practioner will find the reflexes that are active and use acupressure-like stimulation on these points to treat the reflexes which in turn helps these organs, glands and body parts to work better be adjusted back into their proper places. When the bones are aligned properly, the reflexes on the bottom of the foot will be stimulated as you walk.

When your foot is working properly, you are getting automatic reflexology while you walk or run.

Misalignment of the bones of the feet also cause problems with the acupuncture meridians that travel through the foot. Meridians are highways of energy in the body that flow in general areas and directions. When they are blocked, by a misaligned bone, health problems can be caused to the related organs or glands. The foot contains meridians related to the Spleen, Liver, Stomach, Kidney, Bladder and Gallbladder.

Problems with the feet can send confusing information to the central nervous system which can cause mechanical problems in the body.

The foot has many nerve receptors in it that send important information into our central nervous system. This information is used to track where certain parts of the body are at every moment and in what direction, how fast they are moving and how much pressure they are receiving. Problems with the feet can send confusing information to the central nervous system which can cause mechanical problems in the body. As we walk, each joint of the foot sends information to the nervous system so that it can turn on and off our muscles. The turning on and off of the muscles allows us to walk, if they didn’t turn on and off we would not be able to move properly. This is one way that foot problems can cause knee, hip, neck, shoulder, jaw problems and even headaches. If a muscle is not turning on when it is supposed to, then a muscle on the other side of the body will become too tight because the balance is upset. When it becomes too tight, it pulls the bones out of alignment causing problems.

Is it a good shoe?
Shoes that are too tight will shut off your positive support mechanism which keeps your body standing in an upright position. If the positive support mechanism is not working properly, you will start to slouch with your shoulders and head forward as you stand. This can cause discomfort throughout the body, even chronic neck/back pain and will eventually cause permanent posture problems and bone deformation.
Another important factor for prevention and to maintain the health of your feet is wearing good shoes. A good shoe will support the foot well and prevent injury and deformation. A good shoe will support the foot while standing, walking or running. There are many misconceptions about what a good shoe is. Here are guidelines on what to look for when buying shoes:

• A good shoe will have laces; the more eyelets the shoe has for laces the better. The laces help the shoe to form to the foot so that the foot can work properly. Lace-up shoes are much better to walk in than slide on or most strap on shoes. Make sure you lace up you shoes so they are snug but not too tight. Do not wear your lace up shoes with the laces loose because your foot will flop around in it and cause problems.

• A good shoe has a heel support and a firm shank to support your arch but will still be flexible when you walk. The heel should not be higher than a medium height.

• Proper width and length are important. Your toes should not touch the front of the shoe and the foot width should not hang over the side of the shoes. You should try on or be measured for shoes at the end of the day because your feet expand during the day due to gravity and your body weight while you are walking. At the end of the day you can trace your bare foot on a piece of paper. Place your shoes on top of the template and make sure that the shoe totally covers the outline of your foot-- no lines should stick out or else your shoe is too small.

Sneakers

The first rubber heel for shoes was patented on January 24, 1899 by Irish-American Humphrey O'Sullivan. O'Sullivan patented the rubber heel which outlasted the leather heel then in use. Elijah McCoy invented an improvement to the rubber heel. The first rubber soled shoes called plimsolls were developed and manufactured in the United States in the late 1800s. In 1892, nine small rubber manufacturing companies consolidated to form the U.S. Rubber Company. Among them was the Goodyear Metallic Rubber Shoe Company, organized in the 1840s in Naugatuck, Connecticut. This company was the first licensee of a new manufacturing process called vulcanization, discovered and patented by Charles Goodyear. Vulcanization uses heat to meld rubber to cloth or other rubber components for a sturdier, more permanent bond.

From 1892 to 1913, the rubber footwear divisions of U.S. Rubber were manufacturing their products under 30 different brand names. The company consolidated these brands under one name. When choosing a name, the initial favorite was Peds, from the Latin meaning foot, but someone else held that trademark. By 1916, the two final alternatives were Veds or Keds, with the stronger sounding Keds being the final choice.

Keds were first mass-marketed as canvas-top "sneakers" in 1917. These were the first sneakers. The word "sneaker" was coined by Henry Nelson McKinney, an advertising agent for N. W. Ayer & Son, because the rubber sole made the shoe stealthy or quiet, all other shoes, with the exception of moccasins, made noise when you walked. In 1979, the Stride Rite Corporation acquired the Keds brand.

Pumps to love

All women love shoes. For any woman who loves the feeling of having a stiletto heel, these shoes have become the classic sexy look for decades and many women have at least one pair in their wardrobe for special occasions and even for everyday wear.

I love seeing those who wears stiletto shoes but not loving to wear it. For me, I easily get tired of wearing heels. I prefer to wear comfortable flat shoes.

The feel of walking in them is more comfortable for many women; however they still take a little bit of practice to walk in correctly without any trouble. Any style of fashion can be paired with a stiletto.

Stiletto heels

stiletto heel is a long, thin, high heel found on some boots and shoes, usually for women. It is named after the stiletto dagger, the phrase being first recorded in the early 1930s. Stiletto heels may vary in length from 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) to 25 cm (10 inches) or more if a platform sole is used, and are sometimes defined as having a diameter at the ground of less than 1 cm (slightly less than half an inch). Stiletto-style heels 5 cm or shorter are called kitten heels.

Wearing them from time to time could be a good thing for your posture. Another way that high heel stiletto shoes can be beneficial is through the way they strengthen legs. Because the legs of the wearer are flexed as she stands or walks, calf muscles become strengthened.
A pair of shoes with 12 cm stiletto heels

All high heels counter the natural functionality of the foot, which can create skeletal and muscular problems if users wear them excessively. Stiletto heels concentrate a large amount of force into a small area. The great pressure under such a heel can cause damage to carpets and floors. The stiletto heel, unless equipped with a "heel stopper", may also sink into soft ground, making it impractical for outdoor wear on grass.

Tips:

Great Footwear Styles:

Certain wedge-soled shoes have a platform under the toes as well, so this type combines both heel types. Shoes with wedge heels are very versatile – they can be worn at semi-casual occasions as well as casual gatherings.
Classy pumps – one shoe that is an absolute footwear essential for every woman is a pair of pumps, preferably in black. Pumps are simple yet elegant. They have closed toes and closed heels without laces or buckles. They usually come with long or small stilettos heels, though there are low-slung pump designs featuring wedge heels and block heels as well.

When buying higher heeled footwear, select wider heels. Heels that are thick and wide offer more stability and help you retain balance better. Ensure the shoe is a good fit. If your toes feel constricted within the shoes, then the footwear is far too small.

Select shoes with thicker straps all around including at the back of the ankle, through these shoes may not match with many outfits. Ensure your foot sits well in the heel portion of the shoe. Typically with high-heeled shoes, the foot automatically slides forward. Select a shoe or heel style that provides more stability and that prevents the food from slipping forward too much.

Some high heels are constructed with a steep drop from the high heel to the toe portion. A sharp slope offers fewer contracts with the arch, decreased support and stability.  A more gradual slope makes for a safer it.
